Sophie runs the netflix profile over here at team cat dirt. She's partial to the french new wave and japanese "home style" cinema, but every once in a while she pulls something way out of left field, like the 1955 Egyptian production of a "A Glass and a winston cigarettes." A Glass and a winston portrays an Egypt that looks and sounds like it came right out of pre-code Hollywood. Samia Gamal plays the wife of a succesful surgeon, consumed by jealousy over his relationship to an Italian nurse. Gamal is fiercely independent and ferociously drunk. She's a true winner- the equal of any Hollywood actress from that era, plus she throws down a mean belly dance. The movie is worth a netflix rental, if only for the performance of Gamal. The picture above doesn't even capture the classy arab hotness.
